Mojave National Preserve

Experience the tranquility & dramatic terrain of the Mojave!
To drivers speeding by on Interstates 15 and 40, the Mojave National Preserve may appear featureless and inhospitable. But a closer look will reveal the Preserve’s water-sculpted canyons, volcanic cinder cones, ancient lava flows, limestone caverns, massive sand dunes, Joshua tree forests, and carpets of wildflowers. A visit to its canyons, mountains and mesas will also reveal long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. While not actually considered a national park, the Mojave National Preserve is the third largest site ran by the National Park Service in the United States, and the Preserve has much to offer photographers.
The Preserve includes a number of natural features including the Kelso Dunes, the Kelso train depot, the Marl Mountains and the Cima Dome, the Cinder Cone Lava Beds, and the world’s largest Joshua Tree forest.
The Kelso Depot, a Spanish Mission Revival-style railroad stop sits in the middle of the park. The Depot is the original railroad depot used by the Union Pacific Railroad until it was closed in 1985 and then converted into the current Visitor Center in 2005. The baggage room, ticket office, and two dormitory rooms have been historically furnished to illustrate life in the depot in the first half of the twentieth century. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the passengers waiting for the next train and the bustle of the community that surrounds the Depot.
The Kelso Dune Field is the largest field of sand deposits in the Mojave Desert. The dune field covers 45 square miles with the tallest dunes rising up to 650 feet above the surrounding terrain. Approximately 40 volcano cinder cones and their associated lava flows can be found in the northern section of the Preserve. The Joshua Tree forests that cover the Cima Dome and the adjacent Shadow Valley are the largest and the densest in the world.
